Question and Answer on Hypermiling
If you are a driver over the age of 16 then you have worried about the fuel mileage you get on your vehicle at some time or another. And you worry for good reason! Gas is not cheap and it seems to be getting higher every single day. Granted, it is not as high as it was a year or two ago but it still can be costly to fill that tank. If you drive a larger vehicle or one that gets poor gas mileage you want to be able to stretch those gallons as far as you possibly can. That is where hypermiling comes into play. If you have never heard of this concept then you are not alone. Some of the aspects are common sense and can actually help you get better miles per gallon. This article will cover what hypermiling is and how you can use it to get the fuel economy you want.
What is hypermiling?
Hypermiling is not just one thing. It is actually the practice of getting better gas mileage for your vehicle. So there is not just one aspect of it. It encompasses many things. Some of which are very common knowledge and some that are not. But as gas prices continue to go up more people are turning to this as a way to get every penny and drop they can from their vehicle.
What organization is in charge of safety when it comes to hypermiling?
The very practice of hypermiling really began to take blows from people in the automotive industry, law and even hypermilers, themselves. Far too many people were joining organizations that promoted extreme methods that were dangerous and very illegal. Hypermilers came together in 2008 to form the Hypermiling Safety Foundation. The whole purpose of the organization is to promote public awareness of this practice and to encourage people to use legal fuel-saving methods.
How does driving aggressively affect hypermiling?
People who drive aggressively are adversely affecting their hypermiling. Aggressive drivers tend to speed more. When they come to a stop sign or a stop light they also tend to be very heavy footed on the gas resulting in them shooting ahead quickly. That can eat into your gas mileage quickly. Passing vehicles also great affects your miles per gallon. If you drive more conservatively you can go farther for longer. And no, you do not have to creep along. All you have to do is keep things steady. If you speed and surge you are not going to get to your destination much sooner than someone who drove the speed limit and gently sped up at stop signs or lights.
What are the steps for hypermiling?
The first step for hypermiling is to become educated. You need to know as much about your vehicle as possible. You need to know the correct air pressure for your tires. You need to know what type of gas your car functions best with and you need to know the correct size of tire your vehicle should have. It may be tempting to buy those very large rims and tires but when you do, you are not going to get good gas mileage. The next step is learning how to hypermile safely and correctly. That means driving the speed limit, gently applying pressure to accelerate after a stop and knowing how far behind someone to drive.
