Drew Brees Will Grace The Cover Of Madden 2011
The upcoming Madden 2011 edition of Madden NFL Football will feature Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints on the cover. The cover for this year was the first to be determined by votes, so one wonders who is responsible. The Madden NFL cover is a great and terrible thing. One’s image does get onto a very popular video game. That said, there is the Madden Curse to contend with. A small portion of sales would make for some ample payday cash to say the least.
Fans picked Drew Brees for the first Madden 2011 cover decided by vote
Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints quarterback for Madden 2011 was the first fan selected cover. He did get Super Bowl MVP. Close finishers were Reggie Wayne from the Indianapolis Colts and Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings. That begs the question if the voting was interfered with by Colts fans perhaps?
The Madden Curse
There is the Madden Curse to contend with. Supposedly (and correlation doesn’t prove causality) when an athlete gets on the cover of Madden Football, they get injured. Shaun Alexander suffered injuries after his cover appearance and his career declined. Vince Young injured his shoulder and didn’t start the rest of the season. In 2009, Brett Favre tore his biceps and his season went down the tubes. Madden 2010 had Larry Fitzgerald and Troy Polamalu on the cover, and both had drastically shortened seasons as a result of injuries. Did bitter Colts fans pay off EA with short term loans to curse Brees over the Super Bowl?
Drew Brees thinks it’s the bees knees
Drew Brees spoke with BusinessWeek regarding his cover appearance. Drew Brees, with tongue planted in cheek, asked if anyone in New Orleans that practices voodoo could curse the curse. “If they’re Saints fans, then maybe they’ll put a copy in the freezer or something.” The series is one of the most popular in video game history. EA, or rather Electric Arts, has been making it since 1989. Madden 2011 will be the 24th installment of the video game. Drew Brees is proud, but according to a Q and A with USA Today, he doesn’t want anyone reminding Jared Allen that Brees beat him for the cover.
